Throughout my career, I have been drawn to projects that challenge the norm and push boundaries. I have always been fascinated by the idea of taking something familiar and reimagining it in a way that creates excitement, engagement, and new opportunities. For me, sports and entertainment have always been spaces where innovation can thrive. From creating new games to transforming the way people experience entertainment, the lessons I have learned are as much about people as they are about the concepts themselves.

Seeing Opportunity Where Others Do Not

One of the most important skills in creating a unique sports or entertainment experience is the ability to see potential where others might not. Many people look at a game or an idea and see the risks or obstacles. I try to see what could be possible if approached in a different way. This perspective guided me in co-founding Arena Softball, a modern indoor version of baseball played within a netted system. The game introduces new rules and scoring methods, creating a fast-paced and exciting experience for players and fans. While the concept was new and untested, I recognized its potential to engage people in a way traditional baseball could not.

The Importance of Collaboration

No unique project succeeds in isolation. Arena Softball was successful because of the team involved. Greg Joseph, my co-founder and on-site operator, brought operational expertise and hands-on leadership to the project. I contributed as a financial partner and strategic guide, supporting the concept and helping navigate challenges. The combination of skills and perspectives allowed us to create something innovative and sustainable. This experience taught me that collaboration is not just helpful; it is essential. Bringing together people with different strengths can turn a bold idea into a viable and thriving experience.

Embracing Risk and Learning From Failure

Launching a new sports concept comes with inherent risks. There are no guarantees that people will respond the way you hope or that the logistics will work smoothly. Arena Softball required careful planning, marketing, and community engagement. Even with preparation, there were unexpected challenges. Each setback became a learning opportunity. I learned to adapt quickly, make adjustments, and focus on what could be controlled. Taking calculated risks and learning from failures is a key lesson for anyone trying to innovate in sports or entertainment.

Similarly, in my work with The Tasting Room, a wine bar and retail store in Chicago, we created a unique way for people to explore over 100 wines by the glass each night. Both experiences demonstrate that engagement and creativity go hand in hand. A great concept must offer something people cannot find elsewhere.

Launching something new is rarely quick or easy. Both Arena Softball and The Tasting Room required patience, persistence, and a clear long-term vision. There were times when progress felt slow, but maintaining focus on the end goal was critical.
